"My work was heavily influenced and rooted by antique Bojagi. I studied painting but since I was inspired by Bojagi, it became my voice and visual language for my work. I just fell in love with it.  I retained beautiful color palette and geometric abstrictions and reinterpreted its meaning of existence in modern society.   My work can be a big scale of installation piece, or a book art or a wearable art. All depending on how I adopt the techniques. My work is about my root, where I came from and where I am now. It brings together my dual identities of being a Korean woman and woman who is living in a western society."

서원주 / 서양화가, 현대보자기작가
저는 한국의 전통적 보자기 기법과 한국 문화를 기반으로한 현대 섬유예술로서의 보자기작업을 하고 있습니다.  대학에서 서양화를 전공 했지만 오래전 유물 보자기에 매료된 후 작품 생활을 시작으로 보자기는 제게 작가로서의 ‘소통의 창구’이자 ‘시각적 언어’가 되었습니다. 


또한 보자기는 저에게 어릴적 호기심과 두려움으로 밖의 세상을 바라 보았던 ‘창’을 의미 합니다.  한국의 유교적 가부장제도 안에서 여자 아이로서의 저의 유년시절에 대한 기억이 고스란히 그’창’ 안에 있습니다.  제가 느끼는 창은 편안함과 안전함의 마지막선 이기도 하고 반대로 답답한 일상의 구속으로 부터 자유로워질수 있는 탈출구이기도 합니다.  저는 현재 미국에서 작가로서 제가 삶을 통해 겪은 창 안과 밖에 대한 이야기들를 한국의 천연 섬유 이외에도 다양한 혼합재료를 사용하여 색면 추상 또는 기하학적 추상으로 시각화 하는 현대 보자기 작업을 하고 있습니다. 

작가에 대하여
서원주는 서울에서 태어나 홍익미대 서양화과를 졸업 하였고, 현재 뉴저지 버겐카운티에 살면서 현대 보자기작가로서 천연섬유와 혼합재료를 이용하여 한국 전통 보자기의 현대적 해석”에 관한 작품활동을 하고 있다.   2012년에 공모전을 통해 뉴저지주 예술협회로 부터 작가들에게 주는 창작 지원금을 받아 새로운 프로젝트,  “나의창으로” (Through My Window)를 진행 하였고, 캘리포니아 소재 비전 아트박물관으로부터 콜렉터가 뽑은 토마스현대퀼트상을 수상  하는등 다수의 작품이 개인전, 구룹전과 공모전을 통해 미국의 박물관과 갤러리를 통해 소개 되었다.  또한 그녀의 작품은 스토니 브룩대학 내의 촬스 왕센터에서 있었던 두 개의 구룹전시를 통해뉴욕타임즈에 2014년 "Seeing Asian Cultures Through an Indigo Lens,"와  2015년  "Origami Heaven Unfolds" 라는 제목으로 리뷰 되었다.   코리아소사이어티, 뉴욕한국문화원, 이영희 한복 박물관, 스토니 브룩 대학내 촬스왕센터, 웨스턴 캔터키 대학, Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT),  뉴왁박물관 그리고 캔터키 박물관에서 보자기 웤샵을 갖었다.  


현재, 뉴저지 소재 뉴왁박물관에 “Wearable  Pojagi” (2010)와 뉴욕의 스토니 브룩 대학의 촬스왕센터에 “White Wonderland” (2015)가  각각 소장되어있다.

이은영의  사색과 쉼의 메시지

이은영 작가는 기본적인 재료를 사용해 전통 기법 내에서 작업하며, 현 한국화 화단에서 조류를 소재로 그림을 그리는 유일한 여성 화가이다. 이 작가는 그림을  그림에  있어 감성이 표현되는 정적인  그림, 마음의 평안을 주는 정경이 있는 풍경화와 새들의 움직임과 운동감을 화면에서 재구성하여 하나의 덩어리와 선의 조화로서 구성하려 한다. 이 작가의 그림은 전통 동양화의 재료를 써도 20~21세기에 살며 한 소재를 정해 학습하듯 그린 화조화에는 여백이 없어지고 반복이지만 다른형태를 조합해 놓은 구성의 그림이 되었다. 
 
이번 전시는 미국 생활에서 쉽게 접하기 힘든 한국 전통 조류화를 감상할 수 있는 특별한 기회가 될 것이다.

is currently displaying Korean seal engraver Hu-Heng's art works on the wall via Screen Spot. The seal artist, Hu heng is female artist and  moved to West coast in the US. She is the female Chop- Artist in Korea and also Poet.
The title is  the seal artist (An em-size character) from Hu-Heng. Her works are based on the Korean traditional seal engraving arts and she engraved creative words and shapes with Korean and Chinese characters in his works. The words are engraved in stones and printed, showing creative modeling and witty messages.
The artist, Hu-Heng, is a Korean writer and an seal engraver, who was grown up in South Korea until high school and moved to Southern USA, working as an writer, then moved back to South Korean to work on the Korean seal engraving arts. 
Seal engraving is the act of engraving seal characters on a finite and limited space (in stones in Hu-Heung's works). It's a mixed art form of calligraphy and carving arts. 
“Seal engraving requires the process of editing and simplification. It’s very straightforward because it uses a knife instead of a brush. Seal engraving in Korea is simpler, more candid but quite reserved other countries.” - Lee Joonho, the artist, who was first introduced to seal engraving through a calligraphy student organization while attending KyungHee University in 1993.


오는 11월부터 허행 작가님의 전각작품이 소리차 전통극장에서 영상전시됩니다.

와싱톤 지역 소리차 전통예술 문화극장에서는 오는11월10일 부터 내년 2017년 1월 말에 거쳐시인 '허행 전각 작가의 초대 영상전시'를 합니다.
이 영상전시는 우리의 전통 특수한예술의 분야의 전시로 한글 글자와 한문의 형상문을 조합시킨 문구를 작가의 글씨체 서예들을 돌에다 새겨 찍은 예술로 창의적인 조형성보여주는 예술이다.
허 행작가의 작품들은 작가의 창의적인글자의 형태 즉 서체 형태를 보여 줄뿐아니라 관객에게 함께 공유할 수있는 일상의 자그만 즐거움을 전해 주는 문구의 메세지가 해학적으로 재치있는게 표현된 창작요소를 선 보인다. .

허행 작가는 현재 시인이면서 전각하는 예술가로써
서울 경기여고를 졸업 한후 미국 서부에 이주하여, 시인으로 활동하다 1990년대에 한국에 귀향하여 본격적으로 전각을 작업한 작가로 아름다운 문구의 의미와 형상을 조화시켜 조형성을 보여주는 작업을 2001년 서울 한전 프라자 겔러리에서 전각 초대전을 시작으로 현대 문화 갤러리 , 스페이스 아침, 아트 화랑과 각기관의 갤러리에서 6회의 초대 개인전을 가진 갖고 활발하게 활동하고있는 유일한 여류작가이다. 한편으로 저서로서 '달리 할말이없네', '울보구름' 과 '편지가 온날' 시집들을 발간하여 한국 문학계 시단에서 활동하고 있는 작가입니다.

전각 예술은
고대부터내려오는 암각의예술에서 부터 기원을 찾을 수있으나 흔히들 우리 동양역사 속에는 전각이란 시서화 작품에 찍힌 작가의 이름을 전서로쓰여 돌이나 나무에 새겨 작품위에다 찍는역활하는 도장을 일컸는다. 흔히 예술가의성명을 새긴도장을 낙관이라 일컫는다. 근대에들어 우리 한글서예의 조형성을 창조해 한글의 낙관의 예술성이 다양해져 전각 예술이 활발히 인정 되고있다.
돌에다 문구나 성명을 돌위에 아름답게 새기는 행위를 전각예술 이라고 한다. 이는 글시체의 예술과 칼로 파는 조각 행위의 두예술이 합쳐진 예술형태이다.

이번 전시는 작가의 전각 작품들을 화면으로 감상하면서 와싱톤명소 '소리차'
에서 차를 음미할 수있는 행운을 가질 수 있는 기회이다

Annandale Soricha Tea and Theater “Flower of the Wind” Opens
Starting Spring 2016, Soricha Tea and Theater (Led by Director Eun Su Kim) is displaying a variety of Korean art as part of the “Korean Art Digital Display”.
The first collection that Soricha Tea and Theater is displaying is “Flower of the Wind” by Artist Lee, Shin Ho. The display opened last week and will be displayed until June. The impressive collection is displayed digitally with a projector on a 16ft x 10ft screen. The collection truly embraces Spring.
Following Lee, Shin Ho’s “Flower of the Wind” is Artist Lee, Geun Ho’s “Tree Sounds”.
Lee, Shn Soon (DC Resident), who planned the gallery display commented “Artist Lee, Shin Ho is called the ‘Women Jang Tae Chun (An artist that is called China’s Picasso)’.”
Artist Lee, Shin Ho is famous for her strong brush strokes and delicate colors which creates a harmony that makes her the master of Expressionism in Korea.
Lee, Shin Ho has not only been active in Korea but also at a worldwide scale. She has had exhibitions in China, Europe, USA, and Canada, and was part of Sungkyunkwan University, Sunhwa Art University, and Ewha Womans University.
Director Eun Su Kim commented “We expect that Soricha Tea and Theater will improve as a cultural space with Korean traditional tea, Korean traditional music, and Korean art.”

우리나라의 삼국시대 왕릉 내부를 장식한 벽돌의문양을 소재로 하여 우리한지로  뜬 작업이다.
이는 유품으로서의 유산의소중함와 아름다움을 가진것만아니라 그각기 문양들은 영원의  상징인 우주의 에너지를 
나타내는의미가있다 
그리고 작가가 4색(흑,백,청,녹)의 작업으로 창작한것은. 현대에 살고있는 우리생활속에서 공유한 계절의사이클 을 상징을 나타내고자 하고있다 .
이는 우리 삶속에서의 사이클로도 이해 될 수있다고 본다.
